While most in-home consumer electronics (CE) device markets are either mature or starting to decline, streaming set-top boxes remain poised for growth. Relatively low pricing (most devices $99 or less) and increasingly robust service offerings position these devices in a good competitive position when compared to other connected CE devices. Streaming STBs comprise three general functional roles:

• Devices for serving local content (e.g. DLNA client/server): these are the more classic definition of the digital media adapters (DMA), and are more commonly sold by networking companies.

• Mirroring Devices: these solutions help users stream content (or mirror display) from devices like laptops and mobile devices to the TV and/or other displays. This includes technologies like Miracast (Wi-Fi Display) and AirPlay. This new class of products is being promoted by mobile handset manufacturers, mobile operators, and CE companies.

• Smart STB (streaming OTT device): these streaming OTT STBs include products like: Apple TV, Roku, and NETGEAR NeoTV.

The focus of this report is on the third category, smart STBs, which holds the strongest growth opportunity, particularly as these devices incorporate/combine many of the features found in the first two categories. This report considers the current landscape of smart STBs and the growing importance of new technologies like MHL and what it means to form factors like sticks/dongles. Forecasts for smart STBs are provided by region (North America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa) to 2018.
